Abstract: High temperatur reactors (HTR) are able to offen the various sorts of energy necessary for sponge iron teehnology (in a combined system of iron ore reduction and sieetrio arc furnace) such as: - process heat for generating reduction gas from fossil raw materials or nuclear water splitting and - steam for electricity generating purposes. For the present the most promising model of combining HTR and iron and steel works seerns to be the non integrated application. The Iocations of the reactors depend on the optimal location for reduction gas generation. The gas will be delivered to the metallurgical plants through a piping System. The electricity produced by the HTR could be fed into the local electrical grid. This article assumed an existing hydrogen distribution System and the possibility of direct reduction with hydrogen. For the direct reduction process a shaft furnace is ohosen. The economy of reactor application is investigated and future potential use till the year 2000 is estimated . Besides that the effects of HTR application on location and environment of iron and steel industry are described.
